Chiefly family correspondence between Col. John Bauskett, his wife, Sophia Elizabeth Bauskett, and their children, Susan Ann and Thomas Bauskett. Letter, 2 May 1840, from James G.O. Wilkinson, warning Col. John Bauskett that he had in his employ the man who burned the Eatonton Cotton Factory [an early textile mill, constructed, 1836, in Putnam County, Georgia], and directing that he should be discharged; letter, 10 Apr. 1844, Edgefield, [S.C.], S[ophia] E. Bauskett, to Col. John Bauskett, Lexington C[ourt] H[ouse], S.C., discussing the employment of a tutor, Miss White, apparently a graduate of Mount Saint Mary's College of Maryland and including a reference to anti-Catholic sentiment in S.C.; and undated letter, C.M. Duncan, to Mrs. S[ophia] E. Bauskett, Edgefield C[ourt] H[ouse], S.C., discussing the legal battle re settlement of her father's estate. Other items document the education of Susan Ann Bauskett at a Catholic school in Charleston, S.C., at the Academy of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy and the Ursuline Convent, including bill for tuition, 17 May 1847, signed by Superioress of the Ursuline Convent, M[ary] J[oseph] Woulfe [formerly Miss Harriet Woulfe, prior to taking her vows to join the Order of Saint Ursula]. Letters, 7 Jan. 1850 - 22 May 1851, from Thomas Bauskett, a student at South Carolina College, Columbia, S.C., requesting food from home, and commenting on the teaching of naturalist Louis Agassiz (26 Mar. 1850), and his lectures on geology, "I dont believe a word of it.... not that I doubt about his being a very wise man in other respects: but there are some things which men go mad about, and I doubt not but that this science of Geology may not some day turn out to be the Philosopher's stone." Letter, 25 July [18]36, Columbia, [S.C.], Jno. Bauskett, to Mrs. Sophia E. Bauskett, Edgefield, S.C., responding to theological questions she raised concerning "what is to become of us after death"; letter, 11 Feb. 1848, S.E. Bauskett to her niece, Caroline J. Wadlington, Charleston, S.C., regarding conduct of life and ladylike manners, reminding her that "all harsh epithets are unladylike" and that "dignified modesty on your part will always silence and abash aught that is opposed to female propriety in the conduct or conversation of your companions." Letter, 7 Dec. 1844, from John Bauskett (Columbia, S.C.), to his wife, Sophy Bauskett, in Edgefield, S.C., penned from the S.C. State House, re festivities surrounding the election of William Aiken as governor, which included champagne and patriotic music, and reporting a visit with Mr. Sondley, whose daughter, "Cozen Harriet," remained in poor health. Letter, 13 Apr. 1847, from Susan [Ann Bauskett], writing from the Ursuline Convent in Charleston, S.C., asks that her mother send her first Communion dress and summer frocks and describes for her brother the types of food served at breakfast, lunch, and supper. Appended to the letter is a note, 15 Apr. [1847], from the school's Mistress General M.B. McCarthy [Ursuline nun Borgia MacCarthy, originally Isabella MacCarthy, native of Cork, Ireland, born 1792, professed 1816] apologizing for Susan's bad writing, advising Mrs. Bauskett that the date of her daughter's first Communion had been set, inviting prayers on her behalf, and asking that she send the dress for Susan's first Communion. Undated printed circular letter advertising a "Boarding School for Young Ladies" to be opened by Mr. & Mrs. Hassell in Columbia, S.C., with information on tuition and board rates per three-month quarter.
